Morpheus had a thousand siblings (naturalization_market)#101

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Naturalization tests are mechanisms used by many European states to stem the flow of immigration and the access of immigrants to full political rights. While their rationale is questioned, these mechanisms themselves pose interesting questions: What role do nationalistic narratives and myths play in modern policy making? How does public debate affect the feeling of belonging to a community? I created a video performance using the surveillance cameras in an Afghan market in Peckham.
In this video, the competitors (some of them are immigrants trying to get their UK citizenships) answer questions from the book “Life in the UK”(The official book for UK’s naturalization process).
I was influenced by a dream a friend had that took the test just after Brexit to stay in the UK.
